Gok vs Brix?

So I’m sure many of you have heard of Gok’s Fashion Fix, a television programme on Channel 4. The show has changed over the seasons and these days there are competitions between two fashionistas, Gok and Brix. Gok, of course, is in charge of highstreet fashion and tries to show us that you don’t need a “huge wallet” to afford the latest fashion. Brix practically only shops in designers stores and won’t even touch the highstreet. Now, while it seems that the highstreet is the team you should be supporting, sometimes I’m not so sure.

Of course it is cheaper, one thing that many people NEED since designer prices can be ridiculous. But take into account that Brix has had brogues made in England and a cashmere jumper made in the highlands… her “designer” items are made locally, somewhat by hand and by people who are paid well. I’m sure you are all aware that most shops on the highstreet buy their fashion items from poorly paid countries such as China and Bangladesh. When it comes to circumstances like these, it definitely makes me want to pick Brix over Gok. I know that some designers are no better and do by their items from similar, poorly-paid countries and sell them at ridiculously high prices, but I don’t feel confident at all about the highstreet.

And paying three hundred pounds for a pair of well made shoes seems FAIR. And t-shirts for £30. (Because I know how expensive t-shirt making can cost.) If the clothes you are buying cost quite a fair bit, then they are most likely worth that. But seriously, paying £2 at Primark? That stuff is worth more, even if it’s bad quality.

How about you?

Website Remodel and Clothing Line Coming Soon

I am planning to give this blog a remodel, still keeping the simplicity and sexiness haha!

I’m also proud to announce that I will be revisiting my clothing line ideas: I have finally figured out what I want to make and am planning to make one-of-a-kind items, perhaps taking requests one day. A percentage of the profits will go towards a few of my “favourite” charities.

Hopefully this will not take too long and you will all see a few changes by Sunday this week!

filthmart.net

is a gorgeous vintage shop in Hollywood, owned by Mark Sportes and Maggie Fox. The store was originally opened in New York in 1997, but they relocated to Los Angeles. The store features vintage band t-shirts, classic denim jackets and jeans, vests, plaid shirts and vintage boots. It embraces the classic American rock culture… and we love it!

I’ve noticed before that the UK does not feature as many individual, vintage shops as are found in the UK. Someone mentioned a shop in Edinburgh that used to buy American vintage pieces in bulk, but there is no direct sign that it still exists.

I contacted the owner of Filth Mart about ordering online and whether this was possible: she mentions they often send clothing to the UK. You will not believe the sheer excitement I was feeling! Unfortunately she’s away on a trip with her son, as I recently found out from the Filth Mart twitter, so I haven’t heard back yet.

Look Of The Week

Lookbook.nu has been a website favourite for a couple of years now, so I decided it should probably be included in this blog somewhere. I’ve no doubt included a few looks by now anyhow. The website does seem to be getting more recognition, as I’ve seen it advertised in several popular magazines already.

The website holds no other purpose other than allowing selected people post their ‘looks’ and be voted upon. But it does give great inspiration for your own style and perhaps even some shop suggestions, that you may not have known about before.

I think I might have a ‘look of the week’ of some sort, followed by ‘runner-ups’. This week’s top look is not the one I like most, but I’ve chosen it as it includes a fashion item I have yet to blog about: the dungarees. I have wanted a pair for weeks, planning to wear it with a boobtube underneath. The perfect summer outfit, when I don’t want to show my legs.

Look Of The Week

Runner-ups

This was originally going to be the Top Look

I just love the heeled boots with the short shorts and plain white vest.

If you would like more recognition and think I’ll like your style (does not have to be like anything I have posted before: i love originality), then PLEASE comment me and you may be featured next. Or if you are a designer and want more recognition, please leave a comment with a link to your page, or shop, or portfolio. Always happy to help others out!

Designer: Neil Barrett

A designer I’ve recently found out about. His website is here.

I have yet to find a designer that focuses on womens’ fashion in such a cool way like Barrett and Slimane.

Pinar Eris

is a Turkish fashion designer, who launched her own brand in 2005. Her clothes have been worn by Imogen Heap and Rachel Grant, and tend to be based around themes such as elegance, victorian, punk and goth.

Her dresses are absolutely gorgeous. They are so absurb and different, that they honestly just look like they were made by an artist. Here are some photographs:

Don’t you just love the full-on reds in this?

I’m really considering buying this dress. And I don’t even like wearing dresses!

A little bumble-bee like if you think about it, but it totally works!

And to visit her site: http://www.pinareris.com/index.php.

What’s Mine Is Yours

http://www.whatsmineisyours.com/default.aspx

I have just joined this new selling website called whatsmineisyours, but am not too satisfied yet. The form to sell an item is rather slow and it wasn’t clear that the items had to be vintage or designer (it said High Street on the fucking main page!), so now I can’t really sell. It’s like Etsy all over again! However, there are some intriguing offers.

There are a few designer items that are cheap: the only hesitancy is whether the items are real or not. I have always thought though, if no-one knows (not even you), does it really matter? But I guess there is argument to that, since you really shouldn’t be paying designer prices. Hell, designer clothes isn’t even worth designer prices. Unless it’s too gorgeous to resist… in which case, DIYing is essential to try and re-create it ;)

Overall, the website is pretty and looks like it has potential for some bargains. Check it out!

P.S. You can also swap items on the website, as well as buying or selling. They have this wishlist option on your profile, which I guess is how they go about this swapping thing.

P. P. S. The network underlines a prejudice.

Lizzy Caplan/Kat Warbler

I love Lizzy Caplan’s style, especially in The Class and Cloverfield.

Love the boots!

I’ve never been into the high waisted flowy trouser look, but she pulls it off well with the suspenders and the chunky gold necklace.

Kinda 90s, no?

Cute suit! The girls in the sixth form at my school already proved the short trousers with heels look is awesome.

I wish I could find better pictures as there are so many of Kat’s outfits on The Class that I’d love to share. If anyone knows where to find more, let me know and I’ll update!

Sleeveless Denim Jackets

I think they look great with a pair of slightly baggy shorts and a vest.

The jackets also easily fit into the distressed look I wrote about before.

But it also suits a girly style with a summery dress: something more suitable for the sunny weather (if Britain ever sees any of it again after the last two weeks).

But if you want to wear it with something a little more rocker, then try a shorter daring dress and fishnet tights. Maybe add a pair of Doc Martens.
